WHAT IS ECU TUNING?

Updated: Feb 15, 2019

What is ECU tuning? In this article you will be given a quick in-depth look on what exactly ECU tuning is!

ECU Tuning refers to the reprogramming of the engine control unit (ECU) of a vehicle. The ECU is responsible for everything that is related to the engine including, but not limited to, performance, emissions, drivability, and throttle response.

When a manufacturer must sell a car amongst various global markets in different countries, they must consider many variables such as the fuel quality, environmental conditions, and emissions restrictions in various regions when making decisions based on performance and emissions output for that vehicle. This is why most vehicles have additional more headroom for the tuner to extract more power and exploit the full potential with an expertly tuned and calibrated software option.

Different tuners will use a variety of different tools to accomplish their end goal when creating a tune for a particular engine. The tuner will typically start with examining the production version of the software which has been tested and validated by the OEM manufacturer before adding their own changes to increase horsepower and torque, improve performance drivability, offer better throttle response, and add additional features such as removing top speed limiters, increasing torque limits, altering RPM limits, and adding burbles.
